ABOUT THE SOUTH AFRICAN CLINICAL TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION

Clinical Technology and the Association

What is a Clinical Technologist ?

Clinical Technologists are qualified independant medical professionals that forms the interphase between specialized medical equipment and a specific organ system to ensure total body function in both diagnosis and treatment.

There are 7 categories and each one specializes in procedures and apparatus for the diagnosis and treatment of that relevant category.

These categories include:

- Nephrology

- Cardiology

- Cardiovascular Perfusion

- Critical Care

- Reproductive Biology

- Pulmonology

- Neurophysiology

To become a clinical technologist you will need to study a Bachelors Degree in Health Sciences: BHSc: Clinical Technology, you can then do an MSc and progress to a PhD.

Clinical Technologists usually work together with a specialist Doctor concerned with the specific diseases or organ systems and sometimes as a member of a multi-disiplinary medical team.

A Clinical Technologist will either work in Government Hospitals, Private Practice, Reaserch or Academic Institutions.

What is the Association ?

In 2015 the Durban University of Technology initiated the development of the South African Clinical Technologists Association.

Since the inception we have grown to approximately 200 members.

We are now well recognized by the relevant authorities like the HPCSA, DOH, Medical Aid Schemes, Universities and various other regulatory bodies as the collective body for Clinical Technologists

In 2016 the Kwazulu-Natal Clinical Technology Association was established which later became the South African Clinical Technology Association or SACTA as we now know it. We have followed one simple mission - to lead in advancing and serving its community of members, and the Clinical Technology industry at large and to ensure that we as Clinical Technologists regulate our own industry so that we are are not regulated by other external factors and external forces. SACTA provides more ways for its members to connect with the people and resources they need to be successful, and we’re incredibly proud of what we established to date. Get in touch to learn more about us and how to join our community.

We pride ourselves to have clout with the Department of Health, the HPCSA, various Medical Aid funders and is considdered the industry leader for Clinical Technologists.

We also have various Task Teams to adress category specific issues.
